CE Code Rule 8-200: Residential Dwelling Loads
Rule 8-200(1) defines how to calculate the load for a single dwelling unit in Canada. It is the rule behind every residential load calculator Canada search—and the engine in our free residential load calculator.
Rule 8-200(1)(a) — Itemized load
The itemized method adds: basic load from floor area (5,000 W for the first 90 m² plus 1,000 W per additional 90 m²), space heating and air conditioning per Rule 62-116, range demand, water heating, EV charging, and other loads over 1,500 W with applicable demand factors.
Rule 8-200(1)(b) — Minimum
For dwellings 80 m² or larger, a minimum calculated load of 24,000 W (100 A at 240 V) applies. The service size is the greater of (a) and (b), divided by system voltage and rounded up to standard ratings.
